We were soldiers

As I sit here on my day off for the long memorial holiday, Bush's war wages on. I am saddened by what congress did this week. Congress issued another blank check to the president. What a let down. The democrats took office and vowed that Bush's Blank check days are over. What happened? This was a bad political move.

As I write this Blog, a total of 3,441 soldiers are dead and 25,378 have been wounded since the war began (See www.antiwar.com). The cost of the war is rising every second. This was the cost as I wrote this, $428,825,698,122 (See www.costofwar.com). Why are we continuing on this course? This is going to bankrupt the US. At the time of this Blog our National Debt is
$8,811,479,558,264.90 (See http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/). Who is going to pay for this? I am sorry to say that Avery, Jenna, Carl, Lauren, Brandon and Colt will have to deal with it. This will never be paid off in my lifetime and maybe not even theirs. I thought Bush was supposed to be a conservative. The whole meaning of the word is to "conserve".

Based on the DOD extending the tour of duty to 15 months and the authorization of 30,000 more combat troops (actually it will be almost 60,000 more troops that will go due to support personnel for combat brigades) we will have doubled the amount of boots on the ground by Christmas. What is our mission there? All the president keeps telling us is to win against terrorism. How do you plan to do this? Based on lesson's learned from Vietnam, you can not win a war of hearts and minds. This is exactly what Bush wants. He wants the insurgence to bow down to our way of life. This is absurd. I understand that we were attacked on September 11, 2001, however, Iraq had nothing to do with it. Also, the administration has named the new enemy as Al Queda of Iraq. In my opinion this is done to scare and confuse the American public. This group has no connection to the real Al Queda. If Bush wants to win this war we need a clear, tangible mission and work diligently to complete it. Broad concepts of "defeat terrorism" does not allow for a unit of measure. This is not following the S.M.A.R.T. Goal Model (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Trackable). Business's use the SMART method all the time. Shouldn't our government?

All a soldier ever asks of the commander in chief is, Do everything in your power to prevent war, however if war is necessary I will do my duty. We have seen that Bush did not follow what soldier's ask. He and his staff wanted this war since before he took office. Bush has failed the troops since day 1. Many of my friends are on their 4Th and 5Th tour in Iraq. WHY?

Also, it has now come to light that, our commanders are using better flack vest's than our troops. This does not support the LEAD FROM THE FRONT ideals that I learned at the NCO Academy. This is Shameful. Maybe our leaders need to pick up a weapon and stand a post for a while and see if they think that all troops should have what they have.

Bush, maybe if you had done your time honorably you would have a different outlook on this war. May God have mercy on your soal.

Good blog, Darin. I totally agree. What a terrible waste of lifes and resources. We have lost more lifes than were killed on 911, which as everyone knows now, had nothing to do with Iraq. 911 was just an excuse for Bush to go after Sadam, his plan since he took office. He, and Cheney and all his cronies have no regard for human life or suffering. It is all about paybacks, oil, and war profiteering!
