I just want to write about something that happened Friday. I was at Rockford observing my employees. As I was observing an interaction with my technician and a customer, I noticed the customer had a hat that had ARMY printed on it. Naturally, since I am a veteran I caught it. Then I noticed he had a rank insignia on it. It was the rank of First Sergeant. I did not say anything during the transaction, I wanted to see how my employee interacted with the customer, and if she was going to employ the techniques that I taught her.
After the transaction was complete, she said thank you, as she should have. Something in me made me say something. I simply said "Thanks Top".
As the customer started walking out, he realized what I said, and turned right around. He at first had a puzzled look on his face.
We exchanged a look of respect. It was the one of the most moving experience I have had as a trainer. He then said "Thank you for noticing".
With that one look, it was only a few seconds, we both exchanged something that words could never say. I didn't even get his name, but we knew that we had a bond that was very deep. A brotherhood.
Top,
I know you will never read this, but I want to say thank you.
